Notice the Good
Why What We Focus On Grows
Our brains have a funny way of working sometimes.
When something bad happens, it can overshadow everything else. Ten good things could happen in a day, but one bad moment can suddenly feel like it erased all of them.
I’ve seen that happen in my own life more times than I can count.
In a blink of an eye, everything can change.
When you’ve lived through trauma or grief, your brain often expects the worst. It automatically jumps to the negative side of things. I don’t think that always happens intentionally. Sometimes it’s just how we’ve learned to protect ourselves.
But the problem is, when our brains constantly look for the bad, that’s exactly what we end up seeing.
Learning to notice the good isn’t something that just magically happens.
I wish it was.
For me, it’s something I have to practice every day. Sometimes all day long.
It’s not a snap-of-your-fingers kind of thing. It takes effort and awareness.
But the more I practice it, the more I realize how many small good moments actually exist in a day.
Sometimes it’s something simple like the weather.
I love watching it snow. There’s something peaceful and calming about it.
Other times it’s Sir Kit Kat doing something ridiculous and making me laugh.
Those little moments matter more than people realize.
Grief has definitely changed the way I notice things.
It makes you pay attention to the small details in life. The moments that might seem ordinary to someone else suddenly become important.
And those small wins can make a huge difference.
If I waited for only the big wins in life, I’d still be waiting for some of them.
But when you start celebrating the small wins, everything begins to shift.
Recently, some of my “small wins” have actually been pretty big ones for me.
Buying my domain name and creating my website was a huge step. Starting this blog was another.
Those things might seem small to someone else, but to me they were big moments.
Writing these blogs has actually helped me notice the good even more.
It reminds me of how lucky I am and what I do have in my life.
Routine also plays a big role in keeping me grounded.
I’m a creature of habit. If my routine changes even a little, I can start spiraling. Having structure helps me stay focused on what needs to be done instead of getting stuck in negative thoughts.
And my online community plays a bigger role than you might realize.
Every time I see a comment on one of these blogs, it honestly makes my day.
Knowing that something I wrote helped someone, even in a small way, means everything to me.
Because that’s really the goal.
If someone reading this feels like nothing good is happening in their life right now, I want you to know something.
I see you.
And I want to talk to you.
Hit the contact button on my website or leave a comment. Let’s chat.
Because there is always something good, even if it’s hard to see in the moment.
You’re alive.
You’re here.
You’re able to read this right now.
That’s already a start.
Today, three good things happened for me.
I woke up.
Sir Kit Kat is here with me.
And I’m grateful for all of you who take the time to read these blogs.
The more you notice the good, the more your mind starts to shift.
Things become easier to see.
And slowly, those small good moments start multiplying.
Your Turn
What are three good things that happened for you today?
They don’t have to be big.
Sometimes the smallest moments are the ones that matter most.
